Primary PE and Sport Premium
What is the primary PE and sport premium?
The primary PE and sport premium is additional funding provided to schools to improve the quality of PE, sport and physical activity available to pupils.
The funding must be used to develop or add to the school’s existing provision and to make sustainable improvements that will benefit both current and future pupils.
All children and young people should be supported to live healthy, active lives. The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that children and young people take part in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Disabled children and young people should take part in 20 minutes of physical activity each day.
Schools play an important role in supporting children to achieve this. All pupils should have equal access to high-quality PE and opportunities to experience and participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities. Regular physical activity can support children’s health, wellbeing, personal development and academic attainment.
How should the funding be used?
Schools should focus on making improvements across five key areas:
-
Increasing staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sporting activities
-
Increasing all pupils’ engagement in regular physical activity and sporting activities
-
Raising the profile of PE and sport across the school to support whole-school improvement
-
Offering a broader and more equal range of sports and physical activities to all pupils, including equal access for boys and girls
-
Increasing participation in competitive sport
